PBIS Celebration, Awards Ceremony and Parent Teacher Conferences
Parents and Readers of this Blog:
Parents,
This past PBIS celebration for good behavior was an outstanding success!! I want to thank all of the parents who donated goods, and helped out for this event. As you know this event was created to award your students for outstanding behavior in the classroom and in school.
Awards ceremony will be held November 1st....but alas...I looked in the mail and I got this letter...I have been selected for JURY DUTY.....I will have a guest teacher pass out the awards in my absence...Remember all our children will be getting at least two awards....
Please come during my conference 12:40 pm, Monday thru Friday or after school to talk with the me about how your child is doing so far. Monday or Friday after school: (Tuesday : Jury Duty, Wednesday: Chess, Thursday: Dr. Appt.) (who knew I would be this busy?)
I will post the new words on Spelling City on Monday, I forgot to pack my Teachers Edition with all the spelling words, sorry for the inconvenience.
Thank You Parents for all you do.

Classroom Updates: Testing, Math unit 5, Trunk or Treat, PBIS and Hot Dogs
Parents and Readers of this Blog:
This week has been real hectic....FMA's testing for Reading, Writing have been given while Science will be given on Friday. Results are looking positive...please realize that this is a bench mark and is used to show improvement during the course of the year.
Math Unit 5: Well we are underway with our unit on Money... Ooops...the district wants to cover this unit at the end of the year....so I thought should we skip to 6 or continue....I chose to continue since this unit is very short and we are ahead of the district timeline anyway.
I believe that this unit, in this order, has actually been a positive with our kids....They are counting change faster than kids have done in the past...I can only attribute to the emphasis the math program does on looking at patterns in addition and subtraction (plus a few of my own!!) Bottom Line is that we will still be well within the district timeline in math instruction and when "money unit" does come up be looking for some advanced math at that time (multiplication/ division)
Trunk or Treat: This year as in the past we are asking parents to donate a bag of candy for "Trunk or Treat"
Trunk or Treat is when all the kids dress up for Halloween, go on a huge parade around the school and Trunk or Treat parents in the school parking lot (Trunks full of candy) and the kids get the treats as they go by during the parade. This has been a lot of fun for our youngsters and we would like continue with this successful tradition. So please, if you can donate a bag of candy asap ...also the class with the most candy is supposed to win a prize!!!
PBIS: Kids who have been on blue all nine weeks for behavior and have no make up work due to Mr. Fierros by October 27 will get to participate in a Hot Dog and A Movie!!!!
On October 28, Mr Fierros will cook the hot dogs in the afternoon and then the class will enjoy the meal while watching a movie. This is a reward for being prompt with homework, good behavior and completing the end of the nine weeks....
So parents keep an eye out for a donation request for our treat for the kids.
We are looking for the following items:
hot dogs
buns
paper plates
napkins
chips (potatoe, tortilla, and fritos)
pickles
catsup (kids like this more than mustard)
mustard (just one...honestly)
cups
sodas
On - line parents have first dibs on donations so send a note to Mr. Fierros so I can tally what we will need..
Parents, Thank You very much for making this a great year so far!!!!
Mr. Fierros

Books Offer Novel Excavations and Surprises
Dear Parents,
The SAISD Library Media Services Department received an SAISD Foundation Grant of $5,000 to encourage children to read more of the books they want to read and also to encourage them to donate a book to their school library!
Here’s how B. O. N. E. S., (Books Offer Novel Excavations and Surprises) works!
- Your child signs up with the school librarian and receives a reading log. Then s/he reads and logs the required minimum number of books or more:
- 15 Beginner Books OR
- 12 Easy Fiction and Nonfiction OR
- 8 Chapter Fiction and Nonfiction
- Once our child has read and logged the minimum number of titles, s/he brings his/her reading logs to the school librarian. Entries will be marked by submission date. Submissions will be accepted until Monday, November 28th.
- Your child works with the school librarian to select the book your child will donate to his/her school library. The Library Media Services department will use grant funds to purchase the book.
- When the book comes in, you and your child will have the opportunity to participate in a “shelving party”. A book plate will be placed in the book that reads “Donated by (your child’s name). Then with the help of the librarian, your child will shelve the book.
Thank you for your cooperation in working to support pleasure reading and increasing the number of books into our library collections.
Sincerely,
H. Esperanza Garza
Your School Library Media Specialist,
Maria Elena Garza
Your School Principal
and The SAISD Library Media Services Department
Parents: Your child does have the reading log (seperate from Homework). Please fill it out for your child this is a great program!! .
Thanks Mr. Fierros
LMS Parent Letter – B. O. N. E. S. Grant
End of the Nine weeks:
Parents and Readers of this Blog:
The end of the nine weeks term is Friday the 21st
The end of the nine weeks term is Friday the 21st
- For ANY missing grades or very low grades, I will be giving your student a packet beginning on Monday and must be completed by Friday so I can record or change any grades.
- Parents I thank you for participating in the popcorn sale and of course our PTA thanks you too.
- Any child that would like to join Chess club can certainly see me or the chess/scrabble website: http://missionchesscas.blogspot.com/ and download an application.
- This week, we will be doing money during math class: practice skip counting by 5's, 10's, 25's and 50's
- also try mix skipping, for example: 25, ( by dimes) 35, 45, 55 ( by nickels) 60, 65, 70, 75, ( by pennies) 76, 77, 78..... It takes a while but this kind of drill is very effective when it comes to counting change....
- Monitor that your child does all his homework....this is important for practice and learning.
- Reading: I cannot emphasize enough about your child practicing to read by reading aloud everyday....Everyday? Well practically!!!! Fluency (which means making a selection sound like a story instead of a list) must be practiced.. the state of Texas requires a reading rate of 90 words per minute (wpm) less if comprehension is very high....( so get those questions right).
- Remember...I am expecting more from your child this year than I have ever in the past....The new STAAR test is predicted to be very hard.. I really do want to have our kids to be ready for that challenge.
