Free Dress Day Tuesday August 30/ Homework

Due to the outstanding behavior exhibited by the 2nd grade class, Mr Fierros students will have "Free Dress Day" tomorrow.

Today our class prepared their homework folder.
This folder contains our EPA sheet (Extended Practice Assignments)  aka:(homework)
Please note the following:
Your child has 3 sets of words to learn:

1. Spelling Words    2. High Frequency words   and 3. Target Vocabulary

Spelling words are given so that your child will learn how to spell by patterns (see 5x each list). The students must know  the words by Thursday. Any grade below 70% will have to take a retest on Friday.
I usually give the words the Friday before for the week to come. They will be on the blog and Spelling City.

High Frequency words are to be read aloud and when your student is called upon he or she must read them to the teacher.

Target Vocabulary are words with definitions. Students must know the meaning of the word and when tested be able to match the vocabulary word with the definition.

First Day of School

August 22, 2011
Dear Parents and Readers of this blog:

We had a great first day of school in second grade!  We took a tour of the school, sorted supplies, read a book, wrote about what we like/like to do, played some games, ate a nice lunch, went to gym class, participated in calendar math, and started to get to know one another.  We still have so much planned for the rest of the week and I look forward to seeing each student return on Tuesday.
Please send any remaining supplies not sent today.
Reminders: binder must have clear pocket on front (outside), 6 composition books (NOT spirals), 1pkg construction paper, baggies (boys-gallon & girls-quart), pencil bag should be large enough to hold desk supplies (box doesn’t fit in desk)
Please let your child’s teacher know how your child is to dismiss daily.
Thank you for sharing your child with us!
Sincerely,
Second Grade Educators
Mr. Fierros

Saturday, August 20, 2011

Parents and Readers of this blog,

I showed up at school today to finish putting up my posters and our new Math Calendar bulletin board.
I walked in and found almost all of my posters that I put up yesterday on the floor.  My glue gun cannot hold the posters up in the heat of the classroom. I am going to use some elastic sticky stuff (kinda like Silly Putty) and hope that works on Monday.

The following points will be discussed and practiced with your child on Monday:
Math Calendar Wall

classroom rules  (new pbis: explain how to earn or lose points)
tour of school
breakfast and where to wait for teacher
walking in the hall (how to)
back pack tree
cubby rules
pencil rules
lunch rules
label and put up supplies
Stegosaurus practice ( how to put up classroom at end of the day)
line up practice
label journals
book issue list
pickup up list ( bus riders, walking home, car riders ) younger/older siblings

What is AVID?

Parents and followers of this blog,

This year there will be a few changes to our school.
AVID elementary will be introduced to staff and faculty.
Next, the children will be taught to use the very useful techniques to hone their study and learning skills.
Since I am not very familiar with the program I have left a link for you to explore this program.
I am excited since it is a proven program designed to ready our children to be "college bound".
