CLASSROOM NOTES AND TPRI

What a week!  With only four days of school this past week and a very busy last two days before our Easter Holiday, our class is going to be working on unit 18 on math, spelling words and reading story will be the same.

 Fluency and the TPRI

The TPRI EOY (end of the year) test is fast approaching, our students must renew their efforts to read everything that you can possibly put in front of them... I have always believed that reading for the sake of reading is a good thing ( Mom used to take my comic books away thinking it would make me a poor student)   Whether reading a text, library, or fun books, our children must put in the time to gain fluency by reading aloud and silently.

Working with words is another challenge particularly words that are found on the TPRI.  The next few weeks Spelling City will have a series of "Challenge Words" That are based on the Graphophonemic parts that are emphasized by the test.   ( not the actual words, that would be unethical...cheating) but words  such as the

  -ight words

light
night
tight

that way your child will be able to use "prior knowledge" and attack  new similar words such as:

might

Questions found in the text and homework sheet about the reading selection are excellent when trying to develop comprehension or the understanding of what your child has just read.
Have your child read to you or read silently, then ask him some questions about the story he or she just read....this goes a very long way where a child, is not just reading a line of words, but saying them in an understanding manner and tone.  Knowing that questions are next after they read is a super way to develop comprehension reading skills...

Any Question?  Come by or write a few notes on the reply

Thank you again parents.

Field Trip to Sea World

The field trip to Sea World was an outstanding success.  The kids got to see dolphins up close and even got totally soaked by them.  The Shark exhibit was clearly scary since some of the kids could not believe how large those fish are.  Kudos to Mr. Castillo for a pretty well planned field trip, extra kudos for the water and juices that he provided for our kids....The other school and districts were really amazed that we brought that for our kids....(pays to ask for permission!!!)  T

Tomorrow the festivities start with our egg hunt and culminates with our hot dog picnic.  If you want to come by and help us hide eggs or help cook by all means show up about 1:00 pm...Please make sure that you bring anything promised for the egg hunt or hot dog picnic.

Again parents, you are the the best, and have made this year very memorable for your student.

Parents and Followers of this Blog:

A few blogs ago I posted a sight where your child could search our library for books on line and even read on line books, unfortunately the site address was incorrect and Mrs. H.E Garza (librarian) straightened me out and gave me the correct address:

http://www.teachingbooks.net

username:  student@saisd.net

This site allows you to find books to read, listen, and research all kinds of books...
Give it a try and tell me what you think....
