Focusing on Spelling, HF Words and Vocabulary with Spelling City...

Parents and Readers of this Blog:

Spelling City is a great on-line program, it has lots of games to practice and here is the problem.
With lots of games it is easy to lose focus on what is really needed to be done.

For example: If you are on the spelling list you should be concentrating on the Spelling Section (Hang Mouse, Word Search, Unscramble, Word Match, Missing Letter and Handwriting)

If you are on Vocabulary you should be concentrating on the Vocabulary Section (Match It Sentence, Which Word Sentence, Sentence Scramble,Match It Definitions, Which Word Definitions and Word O'Rama)

And finally, High Frequency word need to be reviewed with Spelling Teach Me.

Remember to monitor your child and check his or her progress by testing their spelling, asking them to read the High Frequency words and use the flash cards (printed out for homework)

TPRI Results

Parents and Readers of this Blog:

Finally our class as a whole can breathe a collective sigh that this test is over.
Hopefully I will be get permission to print out results as early as Friday.(if they network my printer at school)

I do have our progress reports ready and for sure those will be going out tomorrow.

My gosh, I never felt so pressured to get a set of grades as I have for Social Studies this
year. I have had to compress 9 weeks worth of work into 4 1/2 weeks. ( I'm on schedule !) But, when
Last Sunday, at home, I was inputting grade on to the computer, I hear a megaphone outside saying " Please leave immediately go to LBJ park to the Red Cross center."  Yep the field next to my house (Wurzbach hwy and Wetmore) was on fire and for a while very out of control.   Then...the power went off...  "Ok", when I returned, "I still have time" I said to myself....(4 hours later) and finished most of the grades by 10:30 pm   I was tired ( and sure as heck the Cowboys didn't make things better)

Next week will be  1/2 week of Social studies and then we will start with science.

September 12 TPRI testing week, Review Reading Week, and Grandparents Day

Parents and Readers of this Blog:

Our new reading list will be rescheduled for the week of September 19th.
This week we will be testing our students on the TPRI test.  This test will measure:
This test is very comprehensive and time consuming so your child will be reviewing concepts that they have learned over the past 3 weeks while the teacher is administering the exam.
Each exam is individualized for each child and will give a very good measure of your child's reading ability.
This is a very long week for your students since they will have to work quietly at their desk while the testing is going on.

Grandparents Day
Grandparents day is Monday, September 12.  Please invite your child's Grandparents to see a wonderful show with their grandchildren. Due to limited space it is only for Grandparents and their student grandchildren.
Monday, September 12, 8:30 A.M.

PTA performance alert (last minute)

Dear Parents and Readers of this Blog:

This is a last minute request!  Mr. Fierros' class has been asked to have a performance at our PTA meeting tonight!  ( If your shocked, imagine how I looked when I was told that this morning when I got to school!!)
So I figured that if possible please attend the PTA meeting, bring your student in their uniform (same one worn today).  Time: 5:30 p.m. Place: Cafetorium

We (our students) are going to be "ambassadors" of 2nd grade and assist at the meeting by helping parents find a seat and pass out programs.  Then we are going to do: The Pledge, Texas Pledge, School Pledge, and a patriotic song.

Let me apologize to you from the start, that this is an inconvenience to you by telling you so late and I will understand if you are unable to make our presentation.

Thank You,
Mr. Fierros

Free Dress Day / Spelling, HF words and Target Vocbulary/ Fluency

Parents and Followers of this Blog:

Tomorrow, September 07 is free dress day.   All students may wear regular clothes except what is not allowed as stated by district policy.
Again, our class has exhibited exemplary behavior and has earned this distinction.

Keep in mind that we have 3 sets of words to learn every week.
1. spelling   2. high-frequency words  and 3 target vocabulary

The spelling words are to be learned and will be tested starting on Wednesday and Friday ( if grade is lower than a 90) On short weeks the test will be given on  Thursday and Friday, with make ups on the following Monday.

High Frequency words are to be learned and will be tested by having the student read the list to the teacher.
(Some parents are concerned that they will not know how to spell these words, but trust me we will eventually learn them during the year.)

Target Vocabulary is just that, the student must know the word, how to say it and know the definition.
Students are tested over the vocabulary by use of a matching test.

Fluency

What is Fluency?   Fluency is being able to read a passage, story or article without having to stop at every word to decode or sound out.  In essence to be able to read where a listener is actually hearing a story instead of what sounds like a list of words.
By the end of the year, your child must be able to read at least 90 words per minute.
This is very important to the reader since they must comprehend what they read and the best way to do that is  that the passage sound like a story.  Also, since the STAAR test is now a timed test our students must read the passage, read the questions, reread,  then answer questions. Our student will not have the luxury of reading the test and answering till the end of the day.

What Do I Do?  Practice, practice, practice....read, reread and read again.... It's o.k. to read something over and over, but eventually your child will get bored and need new challenges. Hopefully our reader text will provide  much of the needed practice your child will need to develop.
... More later....
