Computer Only Summer? I Don't Think So.....

A curious thing about computer usage is that it becomes not a tool that most parents would hope for but actually a deterrent in true learning.

Many students from lower and middle class families use the computer not, as was aspired, as a tool to aid your child in gaining extra study time but ends up being a 'social' tool.

On reading 'Raising a 21st Century Renaissance Children'  the findings show that without creating
guiding factors, our students maybe wasting their times on the computers instead of actually getting in the study time that we as parents and teachers aspire for them. Consider the Lab time during After school care as a good example of this...

95% of our students time was spent playing not very good educational games with very little guidance or achievement gained.

This time would have been more productive had the children been watching PBS science programs or historical facts from 'Brain Pop' as a class lesson then afterwards as a group be motivated to have them research topics that they saw from the show or presentations...

So what do we do?  First read the blog article, I found it a true eye opener, and made me think twice on how to efficiently use computers at our school and especially at home....

Next? Some further thoughts on later blogs;
